A Workshop with Valerie Barker
How does the English language both interrupt and facilitate the teaching and learning of mathematics and science, and other learning areas?
It is much more than just word problems at the end of a textbook exercise.
In this workshop, participants will revisit their own understandings of the challenges of learning English, learning about English and learning in English in two particular curriculum areas.
The workshop is TQI accredited and covers Standards 1, 2, 3 and 6.
Our presenter, Valerie Barker will provide some thoughts on language and literacy, and quite a lot about the relationships between English and mathematics and science. She will uncover some fascinating trip wires for EAL/D learners created by English vocabulary and grammar. Your students will be primary, secondary or adult EAL/D learners: how does English mediate their learning in these content areas?
Valerie is a retired secondary teacher of both Mathematics and English. New Zealand trained, she has taught in NZ, the UK, Brunei (Borneo), South Australia and the ACT. She has also worked in teacher education, at primary and secondary levels, in both undergraduate and Masters programs. She has long had a fascination with the power and interplay of language, linguistics and literacy, and of their relationships with mathematics and numeracy.
