Teaching English Verbs with EAL/D Learners – A Workshop with Libby Baker

This workshop will provide you with a highly practical, evidence-based approach to teaching literacy using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Moving away from traditional, isolated grammar rules, we will explore the clause as the fundamental unit of meaning, focusing specifically on the verb group and process types. Through hands-on, collaborative text-analysis workshops, you will build confidence in deconstructing authentic texts to deepen learners’ knowledge of English. Ultimately, you’ll walk away with concrete strategies for teaching grammar to students in an accessible, authentic and engaging way. Learners of all ages and at all levels will benefit from these strategies.
Libby Baker is a passionate literacy educator and literacy consultant, having presented on a range of literacy topics at local, state and national events on functional grammar, picture book selection and a contextualised approach to literacy.
